Use Case #1: Transforming Agricultural Plastics – The Circular Value Chain for Mulch Films

The Circular Value Chain for Mulch Films is revolutionising the recycling of agricultural plastics. This work, led by Green World Compounding (GWC) and Centro Tecnológico del Calzado y del Plástico de la Región de Murcia (CETEC), aims to turn used agricultural plastics into high-quality recycled products, promoting sustainability in the agricultural sector.

GWC, a leader in plastics recycling, processes up to 30,000 tonnes of used agricultural plastics annually. Through mechanical recycling, they transform these plastics into high-quality recycled pellets, which serve as the base material for new agricultural products.

CETEC enhances this effort by using its pilot plant and R&D expertise to create prototypes of agricultural plastic products, such as films. The process involves extrusion, blow moulding, and comprehensive testing in CETEC’s ISO17025-certified lab to ensure the products meet quality and sustainability standards.

This collaboration demonstrates the feasibility of recycling agricultural mulch films, addressing challenges like contamination and material degradation. It supports the market demand for recycled agricultural plastics, a product that is rarely managed, decontaminated, and treated for recycling. The integration of DATA4CIRC technology will further enhance traceability, waste management, and lifecycle environmental impact analysis, paving the way for a more sustainable plastics industry.
