Celebrating Language and Collaboration in DATA4CIRC

Beyond Borders and Barriers
On the 21st February, we celebrated International Mother Language Day. As we did, we were reminded of Ludwig Wittgenstein’s profound observation: “The limits of my language mean the limits of my world.” For a cross-border research initiative like DATA4CIRC, these words carry significant weight.
Our project is a tapestry of expertise woven from across Europe, featuring partners from Spain, Italy, Greece, Romania, Germany, Austria, and Portugal, as well as from our associate partner the University of Osaka, in Japan. From universities and research centres to innovation agencies and industry partners, each organisation brings not only technical expertise, but also a unique linguistic and cultural lens. In our internal meetings, English serves as our lingua franca – it is the bridge that allows a chemical engineer from Murcia in Spain to collaborate seamlessly with a data scientist from Aachen in Germany. But our “world” as a project extends far beyond the language of our meetings and reports.

Language shapes how we frame problems, how we understand concepts like “circularity”, and how we communicate solutions. Recognising this diversity is not a barrier; it is a strength: it pushes us to clarify our assumptions.
In our project, we celebrate geographical diversity but also linguistic richness. From Western European project partners Idener.ai, CETEC, Green World Compounding, and LOBA on the Iberian peninsula, to Southern European partner Monolithos at the Eastern end of the Mediterranean and Eastern European partner NTT DATA in Cluj, Romania, each partner engages with local stakeholders, policymakers, SMEs, industry clusters, and citizens, in their own language and bringing their unique culture.
This is where Wittgenstein’s reflection becomes especially relevant. If the limits of language are the limits of our world, then effective communication demands that we ensure that data-driven circular solutions are accessible and meaningful to diverse communities.
To facilitate this, the DATA4CIRC website now gives visitors the option of reading our content in any of the languages of our projects partners. By embracing multilingual communication, we expand the world of DATA4CIRC and, we hope, the world of circular innovation in Europe and beyond!
